While watching the noir episode an idea began to form in my mind. What if the entire series is taking place in Spencer's mind? What if Spencer murdered Ali and now she's sitting in Radley imagining all of this? Think about it, after the first part of the first episode (the scene in the barn) everything drastically changes. The four liars change from what they were into caricatures that could only be parts of Spencer's personality. What do they all represent?
    - A - represents Spencer's guilt for killing Ali. Punishes Spencer and the other girls who are also Spencer.
    - Ali - represents the part of Spencer that is selfish and manipulative. She wants what she wants and doesn't care who gets in the way. Spencer constantly pushes her down (read murders), yet she keeps popping back up.
    - Aria - represents Spencer's artistic side. She wears outlandish outfits, reads literary classics, watches old movies, and writes stories. Originally started as a goth.
    - Hanna - represents Spencer's social life. She wears high fashion, preys on the nerds and geeks, and rules the social elite. Originally started as "Hefty Hanna".
    - Emily - represents Spencer's competitive side and latent homosexuality (seriously, watch how Spencer treats Aria). Swims, runs, and bikes. Aria even labels her "the sporty one". Originally started as straight.
    - Toby - represents Spencer's hope for redemption. Toby is accused of murdering Ali. The town then hates and ostracizes him. Later Toby is vindicated, finds friends, a nice job, a lady love, and eventually people change their minds about him. Spencer hopes this is what awaits her after murdering Ali.
    - Paige - represents Spencer's need for acceptance. She's constantly self-deprecating, can't believe she got the girl, and needs emotional reassurance.
    - Mona - represents Spencer's vengefulness. Originally started as the "church mouse".
    - Melissa - represents Spencer's sibling rivalry.
    - Lucas - represents Spencer's feelings of unworthiness.
    - Cece Drake - represents Spencer's admiration of Ali.
    - Parents in General - the often "Out of Town" and unhelpful parents represent independence and the generation gap.
    - Hastings parents - represents societal and parental expectations.
    - McCullers parents - represent judgement.
    - Andrew - represents Spencer's academic side...also hits on Aria.
    - Johnny - represents Spencer's need to escape her preplanned life.

Interesting... I look forward to more of your theory. A part of me hopes that PLL pulls a Buffy with Spencer and goes all "Normal Again" and leave the audience wondering if it really is all a figment of a main character's imagination. It wouldn't be that far-fetched. Or at least as far-fetched as anything else that's happened on this show already.
